BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — For more than a year, popular Asian supermarket chain H Mart had planned to open a Davis Square location in Somerville.
A local resident told WBZ NewsRadio that he’d “be the happiest man alive” if that was real. Luckily, his wish came true Thursday.
Shoppers gathered on Elm St. in Davis Square ahead of the long-awaited grand opening.
“It’s impressive just how organized everything is here,” one early shopper told WBZ NewsRadio. “So, I think this is going to be great for this area.”

Within half an hour, the store was packed as shopping carts and baskets were filled up with various specialty produce and snacks. The medium-size store has a robust seafood department, ready-made food, and specialty Asian products.
“I’m blown away honestly,” said an H Mart regular who used to shop at the Central location in Cambridge. “I’m really stoked about it.”
This had been a long time coming since bfresh, the previous tenant, closed its doors in Oct. 2023. Several resident remarked that the store's closure left them without a nearby option to replenish their fridge.
“Davis Square has just been lacking [a grocery store] in general, so we’re really excited to have anything close by,” another resident said.
H Mart Somerville is the fifth location to open in Greater Boston, alongside Brookline, Cambridge, Quincy and Burlington.
It is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on 240 Elm St. in Somerville.
