BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A massive fire broke out Sunday morning in Roxbury hours ahead of the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Southie.
The Boston Fire Department said a construction waste and recycling building located at 65 Gerard Street burst into flames at around 8:30 a.m.
Fire Commissioner Paul Burke said in a press conference that the construction materials inside the warehouse are very combustible and added to the spread of the fire. He quickly ordered all firefighters out of the building.
“I can’t risk their lives doing something like that just to save a building that’s empty,” Fire Commissioner Burke said.
Around 155 firefighters across 30 fire houses were dispatched to the scene. No one was insider the building and no injuries were reported. Officials urge residents nearby to close windows and stay out of the area while they continue to battle the flame.
“This is going to be a long haul, could be more than a day that we have to put watering on this,” he continued.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
