Lamar Morris enters into a defining position with the release of his debut EP entitled “WAIT ME!”. The British-born artist has taken years to find his voice and his purpose with his craft. His journey began within the West Midlands but then progressed into East London, where culture and community were factors in establishing his persona. Being brought up within a Jamaican household and attending a Nigerian church meant that his upbringing was filled with many different types of musical expressions. It was these that built the basis of what his sound would become.
Morris’s upbringing involved soul, gospel, and reggae music. Pop music was introduced to him via relatives and friends. Indeed, Morris recalls seeing “Thriller” for the first time and evokes how this experience ignited his passion to perform and create. “I was introduced to pop artists such as Michael Jackson, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Usher, Ne-Yo, SisQo, Bruno Mars, and Weeknd, among others, at a relatively young age.
The Moment Music Became a Calling
Lamar Morris started writing and producing songs at a tender age. By age fourteen, he was able to create his first full song and perform it at school assembly events. His engagement with music involved practicing for hours every day at school to create beats and learn more about song creation. By 2014, Morris realized that there was a transformation that assured him he needed to pursue music full-time.
“I remember a significant experience before that,” he continues to explain. “I was sitting on the floor of my mother’s living room when I envisioned my future so vividly that it was almost like I was promising myself something. There was this sensation that went through me at that time, that I still feel to this day, that confirmed me to become a musician.”
Creativity, Process, and Purpose
Morris bats around songwriting with ease and intuition. Songwriting starts with melody for the creative. The instant a melody comes together, Morris’s words begin to unfold intuitively. Creating songs with emotions and movement becomes easy knowing that when songs him move unconsciously, that song’s ready for release.
His creative process entails collaboration, too. His collaboration with different producers and engineers depends on the project’s vibe. His ideal collaborators would be musicians with whom he can share common interests and a passion for music, because many of his collaborators form lasting partnership ties with him.
Introducing “WAIT ME!”
“WAIT ME!” comes with six songs that were molded from real-life experiences. James Morris wants listeners to feel the emotions poured into every track, like every song holds fragments to a bigger picture. It comes with a phase of Morris' life wherein there was a focus on regaining strength and freedom to express himself with no signs of slowing down soon. His aim with the project is to encourage people to sing, dance, reflect, and feel alive. With “WAIT ME,” James Morris starts a new era with purpose, passion, and dedication to his music.
