GRPD: Man dies after officer-involved shooting on Grand Rapids' west side

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Grand Rapids Police say a man has died following an officer-involved shooting on the city's west side.

Officers responded to a home on Strobel Avenue near 4th Street around noon on Saturday on a call of a domestic dispute between a man and woman. She left, but when police arrived at the scene, Deputy Chief Joe Trigg said the man inside the home refused to come out or answer questions, so they left.

Officers returned to the scene sometime around 5 p.m., after receiving a phone call from a woman saying that the man had been sending her text messages saying he had a gun and was going to shoot himself, allegedly.

Officers saw the man leave the home, get into a car and leave. They then initiated a high-risk traffic stop. Trigg says the man got out with a handgun and fired multiple rounds at the GRPD officers.

"At that point, our officers returned fire and struck the subject. They were able to render aid to the subject. He was transported to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries," Trigg said at a media briefing at the location.

He added that Michigan State Police are now conducting an investigation. Trigg said three GRPD officers fired their guns. They are now on standard leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Trigg said he believes the home was a residence that the man and woman shared.

The age of the man involved in the gunfire exchange was not immediately available, nor his name and what led to the domestic situation.
