(Des Moines, IA) -- Legislation that would add $1 million from Iowa's general fund to the state's Double Up Food Bucks program has passed a subcommittee. Senate Study Bill 1012 would boost the Iowa Healthiest State Initiative program, which is usually funded privately, and allow it to expand to new locations.
Sen. Janice Weiner (D-Iowa City) is the Senate Minority Leader, and she says it's got bipartisan support.
"That allows families to buy healthy foods for their families that they might not have otherwise been able to afford," Weiner says.
The bill heads back to the Senate Health and Human Services Committee for further action.
