If you’ve ever been told to “grow a backbone,” there’s now a procedure for that. Scientists at the Francis Crick Institute in London have successfully grown a notochord in the lab. The notochord guides the formation of the spine and nervous system in a developing embryo, something that’s never been done before.
The achievement was made using stem cells, and while the lab-grown notochord is simple, it means the road is open to huge developments involving the nervous system. And yes, it was human spinal tissue the scientists grew, giving scientists a leg up to study developmental disorders.
