Florida officials warning the public about the population explosion of the Asian swamp eel throughout the southeast, especially in Florida.
The University of Florida, U.S. Geological Survey, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers encourages the public to report sightings of the invasive Asian swamp eel in their waterways.
The Asian swamp eel is a fish that breathes air and is native to Southeast Asia. It thrives in muddy, stagnant waters.
The species was detected in Florida two decades ago and also inhabits numerous parts of the country, including Hawaii and Georgia.
Florida residents are urged to report through the USGS Nonindigenous Aquatic Species website, EDDMapS website or App or FWC’s 888-Ive-Got-1 hotline.
