My Favorite New England "Theme" Park- Is Now a Ghost Town...

I don't know how old I was when my parents took us to SIX GUN CITY in Jefferson NH, but the memories of it are like pictures I've looked at a thousand times.

We only went once, but man, did I love that place as a kid....

Sure we went to Santas Village (which, by the way - has held up incredibly well and still is a great place to visit), Storyland, The Polar Caves, Lost River, and of course- Clarks Trading Post-

But Six Gun City was a place made for little guys like me who loved shows like The Rifleman and old westerns. (And yes, if you know what I'm talking about- YOU, my friend- are old as ****- haha - just like me).

Six Gun City was a "real" Western town with (what I thought, at the age of 6) were REAL cowboys, Native American's and bad guys. There was the saloon, a general store, horses, wagons and carriages everywhere.

They'd play out a bank robbery in the street, and bad guys being brought to justice by the sherriff-- and all the cool stuff you saw in movies. They even had a few rides too!

Maybe the adults saw it and thought it was just "ok" - but to me-

IT WAS AWESOME.

Last weekend, I pulled on to Rt 2 as I was out doing some landscape photography when I passed it. And then I promptly turned around and went back- and walked right up to the gate and looked in...

As things always do - it seemed so much bigger when I was kid. Funny how time does that, huh?

Sad, in a way, I guess.......but I get it.

Obviously, parts of that type of thing wouldn't play well today- and rightfully so. I know they made another go of it around 2012 or so - but it didn't last long. It didn't stand a chance in the world of places like Canobie and Six Flags.

It was an old homey type of theme park - and today that's unsustainable financially.

And so, today it's a ghost town. I didn't walk in because I didn't want to tresspass, but from what I saw- it was a lonely looking place....

But it's funny how the mind works sometimes.... because while it certainly feels and looks desolate....

I could still see it through the eyes of 6 year old me.

And I still love the place.

Long live Six Gun City.
