My Offering, on National DJ Day

So, it was National DJ Day...... and all these folks I know in radio were posting pics of them behind the mic, so I figured- ok, I'll play along- and offered up this golden nugget:

Back to where it all started...... WUNH. Circa 1983.

Welcome to GK'S TRAVELIN' FRO SHOW, BABY!!!! Check out that fro! Hell, I had it on my head AND chin!!! And the badass, totally professional headphones? Courtesy of my SONY WALKMAN, bro!!! Look at me, watching the clock as I try to time s*** out to be perfect, hand on the toggle switch, about to throw my mic into PROGRAM and start broadcasting to...........about 7 people! Two of em were my dorm buddies, and two others were my parents!!!

And so it began..... PLAYIN THE HITS FOR YA ALL NIGHT LONG!!! I GOT THE PICK OF THE PACK, THE CREAM OF THE CROP- ITS NUMBER ONE AND GETTING HIGHER ALLLLLL THE TIME!!!!! - haha -

Ok, I never actually talked like that. But - whatever....it was a start, and I loved it. Actually, I never wanted to do anything else. EVER. I never thought- "Hey, I want to host a MORNING SHOW!". I just wanted to play tunes, because I loved music so much. I mean, I couldn't think of a better job than playing records for a living. And 2 weeks before I graduated from UNH, I got a job at WHEB AM - playing the recorded voice of an old guy on a station that played big band music. But I didn't care, man - I got my foot in the door. And that''s all I needed. E

Eventually, I did everything from weekend overnights on the FM side, playing rock - then moved around and did 2a-6a, 10p-2a, then to 2-6pm. Oh yeah, and when I moved into mornings- I reigned in the fro a bit...

And then, as time went on and The Buzz happened.....well, I may still suck, but at least the photos got better....haha (photo by Don Chick)

Anyway - 36 years later, I'm still here.

Trust me, it's as much a surprise to me as it is to anyone else - HA!

But I can't lie - I still love it. I love the people I work with. And I love all of you out there that are a part of our radio family. You make it all worthwhile.

And to keep it all in perspective- National DJ day comes one day before National Squirrel Appreciation Day. So that tells you where we are in the pecking order....
