Tom Petty's Last Two Songs Live, and Some Thoughts

Here are the last two songs Tom Petty ever performed: American Girl, and You Wreck Me.

There are certain artists who's music becomes a soundtrack to your life. You attach their songs to moments in time in your life.Tom Petty was one of those artists for me.

What's your favorite Petty tune? And what does it remind you of? Here's some of mine:

I Need to Know- 1978. I was in Tampa Bay visiting my brother (in the USAF). This song was all over the radio.

Don't Do Me Like That. 1979. Senior year in high school. I was working at the IGA, and had the poster of the album cover on my wall.

The Waiting. 1981. I listened to this album (Hard Promises) constantly after losing my best friend in a car crash.

Nightwatchman. 1981. I would sing this song while walking around UNH when I worked security there. I was the Nightwatchman. I made the rounds....

Southern Accents. 1985. My early days at WHEB. Everybody loved "Don't Come Around Here No More". I didn't. I loved this one.

Free Fallin. 2015. The song had been played to death on radio and I had tired of it. Then I saw him (for the 3rd time) in Portland - and when he sang it - it was brand new again. And I fell back in love with it.

I saw Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers three times - the last of which was in Portland ME. It was a night that was exemplified by my explanation of Free Fallin' that I just wrote about. All the old songs-  weren't old anymore. Tom Petty had a way of making things we've heard a thousand times- feel new again.

And there's not a lot of artists that could do that.

He was an American great.
