State Participates In Drive Sober Campaign

BOSTON (WBZ-AM) The Commonwealth's Executive Office of Public Safety and Security launched a "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over"campaign this month.

Massachusetts State Police Troopers and 150 police departments across the state will stop any driver who shows signs of impairment or driving dangerously

The campaign is aimed particularly at young male drivers who are more statically more likely to be involved in fatal drug or alcohol related crashes.

Under Secretary of Law Enforcement Jennifer Queally says the campaign will emphasize the importance of personal responsibility.

She notes the likelihood of retail marijuana stores and bars will open in the state next year and that pot can further impair driving especially when combined with alcohol.

The Commonwealth hopes to increase the number of police officers with special training in detecting when a driver is impaired.

In 2016 nearly 119 people in Massachusetts died as a result of impaired driving according EOPPS Highway Safety Division.
