After 54 years, New York transit officials have finally learned how to spell "Verrazzano." The Metropolitan Transit Authority on Wednesday put up 19 new signs for the city's Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, which was named in honor of Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano. The new signs replaced the old ones, which have displayed an incorrect spelling of "Verrazzano" -- which was missing one of the Z's -- since the bridge opened in 1964. The change comes after a decades-long battle to get the spelling right. Opponents of the switch have argued that the city should focus on lowering the bridge's $19 toll instead of spending money on new signs. "Are there more important things we should be focused on when it comes to the Verrazzano Bridge?" says Councilman Justin Brannan. "Absolutely. The toll is too damn high.
