A vehicle fire on Interstate 78 in Lehigh County caused significant traffic delays on Thursday (July 10). According to Pennsylvania State Police, the incident occurred just after 6:15 a.m. near exit 68.7 in Lower Saucon Township, between exit 67 in Hellertown/Bethlehem and exit 71 to Route 33 in Stroudsburg. The driver of the tractor-trailer involved in the fire crashed into a guardrail, igniting the vehicle. Fortunately, the driver escaped with only minor injuries.
Trooper Nathan Branosky, public information officer with Pennsylvania State Police’s Troop M, reported that the left lane of the eastbound highway reopened just before 9 a.m., while the right lane remained closed as crews worked to extinguish the fire and clear debris. The affected portion of the highway was expected to remain closed until about 12:30 p.m. Traffic around the crash site was slow, but the westbound lanes were not impacted.
